Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) goes live on 1 January 2026

Those importing more than 50 tonnes of cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertiliser, as well as all importers of electricity or hydrogen, need to have submitted an application for a CBAM account number or a CBAM application
reference number under the EU CBAM (or received an authorisation at the time of import). Importers who have not already submitted applications need to act fast now to avoid risking disruptions, delays or penalties. Applications must be submitted prior to import and at the latest by 31 March 2026 for all concerned import companies.

Carbon footprint of construction will double by 2050 globally

A report published in ‘Nature’ quantifies the carbon cost of constructing the global built-environment over the past three decades and projects it to 2050. The findings indicate that the global construction carbon footprint has doubled over the past three decades and is projected to more than double by 2050.

LME looks into premium prices for sustainable metals

The London Metal Exchange (LME) is exploring the potential for premium prices for sustainable metals. It says that by making a sustainability price differential public, the value attached to sustainable metals will be transparent and could support the development of the market for sustainable metals.
