CCC: the UK is not prepared for climate impacts

Climate change is making extreme weather in the UK more likely and more extreme. This looks like heatwaves, heavy rainfall and conditions that enable wildfires. The UK is not appropriately prepared for this.

The immediate concerns the Climate Change Committee (CCC) has are:

Over half of England’s top quality agricultural land is at risk of flooding.
6.3m properties in England are in areas at risk of flooding.
Over a third of railway and road kilometres are currently at flood risk.
Heat-related deaths already occur in the thousands each year but could rise several times over to exceed 10,000 in an average year by 2050.
Estimates suggest that unchecked climate change could impact UK economic output by up to 7% of GDP by 2050.

Warming is making extreme wildfires more likely and more severe

New analyses of the 2024-25 fire season add to the growing evidence base that warming is making extreme wildfires more likely and more severe. Some of the most prominent extreme wildfire events of the global fire season, in Los Angeles and parts of South America, were 2-3 times more likely due to climate change, and the area burned by wildfires during those events was 25-35 times larger.

Heatwaves linked to carbon emissions from specific energy companies

A study published in Nature shows that around one-quarter of the heatwaves recorded in the period 2000–23 can be directly linked to greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions from individual energy companies. It says that more than one-quarter of the 213 events recorded would have been “virtually impossible” without human-induced global warming.

Weather records and extremes now the norm in UK climate

Record-breaking and extreme weather has become increasingly commonplace in the UK, says the Met Office. Baselines are shifting, records are becoming more frequent and temperature and rainfall extremes are becoming the norm. The latest 'State of the UK Climate report', published by Wiley in the Royal Meteorological Society’s ‘International Journal of Climatology’, provides insight into the UK’s changing climate.
