The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that, between January and April this year, claims for weather-related damage to people’s homes and possessions in the UK topped £200m for the first time ever. Pay-outs surpassed the previous quarterly record from Q1 2022 by £67m.
The latest figures have prompted renewed calls from the ABI for the UK Government to commit to adequate, long-term investment in flood defences. These record pay-outs follow significant and consistent bad weather, including Storm Eowyn – which the Met Office described as the UK’s most powerful windstorm for over a decade.
The latest claims data from the ABI also reveals that in the first three months of 2025 claims for damage to homes from adverse weather totalled £226m, £80m (55%) more than the weather-related claims pay-outs in the previous quarter.
ABI members also paid out £109m to businesses for weather-related damage and business interruption. This is an increase of £7m (7%) on Q1 2024.
