UK to become sustainable finance capital of the world
The UK Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, has outlined plans to support banks and large companies in developing climate transition plans. To date, about 70% of FTSE 100 companies have voluntarily developed many of the key elements of a transition plan. The UK Government says that widespread transition planning will help provide long-term certainty and clarity to help scale the sustainable finance industry.
Great British Energy legislation passes through Parliament
The Great British Energy Bill has received legislative consent from all three devolved governments. This will allow Great British Energy to operate more effectively in each devolved nation. Great British Energy will invest in clean power projects across the UK as part of the UK Government’s Plan for Change to become a clean energy superpower.
Egypt’s first solar and battery project backed by EBRD
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is making a $30m loan available to Obelisk Solar Power, a project company owned by Scatec ASA. The financing facility will finance a new 1GWac solar plant in Egypt with 200MWh of battery storage. It is expected that the project will reduce CO2 emissions by 1.3m tonnes per year.
Australia’s election: “an energy referendum”
Australian Climate Council CEO, Amanda McKenzie, has said in response to the Australian Federal Election result: “This was an energy referendum. Nuclear bombed at the ballot, with Australians dubbing it toxic. Australians backed a bright, clean, renewable energy future and endorsed the progress that has already been made.”

The increase in electricity consumption through 2027 is expected to average around 4% annually, says the International Energy Agency (IEA).
